The 1st gen Civic's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) are mounted on the top edge of the dash at the windscreen and can be seen from the outside. There is also one on the hood mounting bracket 74-78 Models. 79-83 are on the firewall, and rear door jamb.

The Honda Civic 73-79 Chassis code was designated SB. First generation Honda Civics had two chassis codes, depending on the year.

1973-1977: SB1

1978-1979: SB2

The first three digits indicate engine model and the balance is production numbers.
